Austin High School would like to recognize our seniors for graduation in the following manner. While circumstances are not ideal, we believe this plan will honor each graduate and allow for celebrations among each family.
Each senior and up to 9 family members will be given the opportunity for an individual celebration in our Girls’ Gym. Each graduate will get their cap and gown and regalia on, walk across the stage, receive their diploma, and get their picture taken. The graduate should come dressed in their gown and wear suitable clothes underneath, as gowns will be returned when finished with pictures. Graduates will be videoed and then they will have the option to take pictures with family members present. Seniors will also receive any awards and scholarships/scholarship information they have earned during that time. Picture packets will be available for purchase from Euleda Turner. Order forms will be given out next week with the gowns. Each individual segment of graduates walking across the stage will be compiled into a ceremony to be aired on Facebook Live and the Community Channel on Friday, June 5th at 7:00 pm. Those with speaking parts will also be filmed and edited into the video. Each student and family will be given a 10-minute time frame to walk across the stage and then take a quick photo with the graduate together. All other photos need to be taken before the graduate and family arrives, as we will only allow for 10 minutes for each graduate. Every graduate will receive a digital copy of the ceremony and a diploma picture that will be picked up at a later date free of charge. The seniors will turn in their gowns and receive their diploma packet as they exit the building.
Times will be assigned alphabetically for the 3 days of individual ceremonies. These days will be Tuesday, May 26th-Thursday, May 28th from 8:30 am-3:30 pm. If the time given does not work for your family, special arrangements may be made. Times will be communicated to seniors through email on a Google Doc in the next few days. Each family should arrive at their appointment time and walk into the entrance of the Girls’ Gym, by the home locker room, which will be marked. Parking will be in the back lot closest to the gym. The family will come in and stand in a designated area, graduate will walk across the stage and accolades will be read. Graduate and family will then proceed to the back of gym with their family and take a quick photo if desired and receive awards. There will be a diploma packet waiting for each graduate along with a bin to drop off his or her gowns right outside the gym in the Great Hallway. Graduates will keep their cap, tassel, and each one will receive a graduate medal. No one will be allowed back into the rest of the school building for cleaning and safety purposes.
Family members over the age of 65 are strongly encouraged to watch the ceremony on June 5th instead of coming to the ceremony. Also, it is requested that family members wear masks to the ceremony. Anyone who has had a fever in the past 72 hours or had any Coronavirus symptoms should not attend. The building will be continuously sanitized and every effort is being made to limit exposure such as doors being propped, one-way foot traffic, designated areas for families to stand, contact free diploma ceremony and pictures…ect.
Seniors will need to come to the high school office to pick up their cap and gowns, turn in Chromebooks/textbooks, pick up picture order forms, and get returned the contents of their locker on Tuesday, May 12th and Wednesday, May 13th from 9:00 am until 3:00 am. The cost for gown rental is $40. Also, National Honor Society students may pay for stoles at that time and that cost is $25. You may pay with cash or check when picking up gown. Also, any outstanding class dues should be paid at this time. If these times do not work, contact the high school office for a different appointment time before May 22nd. When picking up and dropping off materials, please pull up in front of the HS Office and call (812) 794-8730 and let the staff know you have arrived. From there, please open the trunk of the vehicle. Cap and gown and locker contents will be placed in vehicle. Returned materials will be placed in bins and payment for gowns will be accepted. Underclassmen may come to the high school office to be returned the contents of their lockers and turn in any textbooks on Thursday, May 14th from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm.
